Day 1 Arrival in Marrakech or Casablanca

Day 2: Marrakech Sightseeing

After a morning at leisure, experience the hustle and bustle of Marrakech with an official guided tour. Visit the dramatic Koutoubia Minaret and 14th-century Ben Youssef Madrasa. Explore the colourful and aromatic souks as you weave through the labyrinth of narrow alleys and finish in the infamous UNESCO-listed Djemaa el Fna Square. You will discover alluring bazaars selling hand-made rugs, spices, and souvenirs, and see acrobats, henna ladies, and Gnaoua musicians competing for the attention of the crowd.

Day 3: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate

This morning, we start our tour of Morocco and head through the High Atlas Mountains. Our path will take us over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at an altitude of 7,415 feet, the highest mountain pass in North Africa. Passing through unforgettable mountain landscapes and various villages where corn can be seen ripening in the sun on the packed earth roofs of the stone houses. We will visit Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, a must-see UNESCO World Heritage site and the backdrop for many Hollywood blockbusters such as “Gladiator” “Indiana Jones” and “Lawrence of Arabia”. From Ait Benhaddou we will continue to Ouarzazate, the Hollywood of Morocco, where you will have the option to visit the local film studios and museum.

Day 4: Ouarzazate – Skoura Oasis – Roses Valley – Boutaghrar – Dades Valley

Leaving Ouarzazate we will pass the Skoura Oasis, where numerous ancient kasbahs, stand among the palm trees. From here, our route will take us through Kela’a M’gouna, the Valley of Roses, where you can purchase locally-made rose-based toiletries. These products are gorgeous and highly valued throughout Morocco. then we will have some fun,  off-road along the Boutaghrar piste, where we hope to visit Berber nomads in their caves and join them for a glass of tea. Afterwards, there will be time to stroll alongside the river before arriving at the hotel.

Overnight in Dades

Day 5: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Rissani – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi Sand Dunes.

Today as we discover Morocco, we head to Todra Gorge on the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs”, passing the village of Tinghir on the way. On arrival in Todra Gorge, there will be the opportunity to hike for an hour or two, through the villages and fields cultivated by the local Berber women and see the spectacular peaks of the High Atlas Mountains as a backdrop. Then onto the desert road, we will journey to Merzouga via Rissani. In the afternoon we will enjoy a camel trek into the apricot coloured sands of Morocco’s highest dunes. Arriving at our desert camp in time to watch the sunset and providing the most wonderful photo opportunities. In the evening you will be served traditional Moroccan cuisine and can enjoy live Berber music around the campfire. You can sleep in your tent in the silence of the desert, or outside under the stars and gaze at the crystal-clear Milky Way like few people have seen it.

Day 6: Desert Exploration Day

Today we will visit the Khamlia Village, the home of the Gnaoua people. These are descendants of slaves who were brought to Morocco from Senegal via the Salt Route and are famous for their trance-like music which we will have the opportunity to hear. We will also visit Dayet Srji Salt Lake, which is the resting point for many kinds of migratory birds including flamingos (dependant on rain-fall). There will be an opportunity to meet with desert nomads and learn more about their incredible way of life or perhaps you would like to have a go at riding buggies or quad-bikes in the dunes. Tonight you will stay in a charming kasbah hotel on the dune line where you can relax watching the moon rise over the dunes.

Day 7: Merzouga – Erfoud – Ziz Oasis – Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes

Firstly we visit Erfoud in the dramatic Ziz Gorge, a spectacular gash in the hills that surround the Ziz Oasis, the largest oasis in Morocco. After passing through a barren plain of scrub and desert on the other side of the mountains, we reach Midelt and here we can enjoy lunch with a view of the stunning peaks of the High Atlas. The landscapes vary wildly until we reach the cedar forests in Azrou and might be lucky enough to spot a troupe of Barbary Apes that still live wild here. Then onto the Switzerland of Morocco, Ifrane. Finally arriving at our destination, the ancient city of Fes, which is the cultural capital of Morocco and the most complete medieval Islamic city in the world.

Day 8: Fes Guided Sightseeing Tour

Today as we discover Morocco, you can enjoy a full day sightseeing with an official local guide. This begins at the Merenid Tombs, before moving onto the Musée des Armes, a fortress that once protected the city. We will enter the Fes el Bali, where the only transportation is via donkeys and mules. We will visit Karaouiyine Mosque, one of the oldest in the world, which functioned as the first university in Morocco. After this, we will continue to discover Morocco through the alleyways passing some of Fes’ most important buildings including the Dar al-Magana, a 14th- century water clock, and the Zaouia al-Tijaniyya. We will stop to visit the Ech Cherabliyine Mosque (Mosque of the Slipper-makers) before we continue into the UNESCO-recognized Fondouk el Nejjarine. Within the fondouk’s is the Musée de Bois, which displays carved doors from the Bou Inania Madrasa. We will stop for lunch at one of the Moroccan palace-restaurants that serve a traditional Fassi meal of mezas (Moroccan tapas).  In the afternoon we visit the Musée Dar Batha to view the pottery, leather-work, wood, books, and 19th-century manuscripts. Then we explore the Andalusian Quarter, the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), and of course the famous leather tanneries where the methods used havent changed in hundreds of years a little farther south, the Ville Nouvelle (New Quarter).

Day 9: Fes – Volubilis – Moulay Idriss – Meknes – Rabat

This morning we will visit the outstanding archaeological site of Volubilis. This Roman Ruins is a UNESCO world heritage site of great importance and also gained international acclaim when Martin Scorsese used it as the feature location for his film “The Last Temptation of Christ”. We will briefly visit Moulay Idriss before Meknes, known as the “Moroccan Versailles”. Founded in the 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail. Here we will see the highlights; Bab Mansour, the 8 metre intricately patterned arch argued to be the most beautiful in Morocco; the Place El Hedime (Square of Ruins) and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Next, we will drive to see Koubba el-Khayatine and Habs Qara, an imperial pavilion that once received diplomats coming to negotiate the ransom of Christian prisoners. We will continue to the Dar el Makhzen, the “Palace of Labyrinths”, and then to Bassin de l’Aguedal, a water tank built to supply water to the palace and imperial city. We then make the short drive to Rabat, where we will spend the night.

Day 10: Rabat – Casablanca or Marrakech

After breakfast,  you can explore Rabat, the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco. Walk around Oudayas Kasbah, then continue to the Hassan Tower, The Tower is actually a mosque, emblematic of Rabat and famous for its unfinished minaret where storks make their nests. We will also visit the beautiful Mausoleum of Mohammed V, decorated with stained glass windows, white marble, and a wrought-iron entryway with a stairway leading up to an impressive dome. After we finish we will depart for Casablanca, the economic capital of Morocco, where we will visit the Hassan II Great Mosque, one of the Islamic world’s greatest monuments, what a way to discover Morocco!
